 THEORY

A. Preposition of time:

·        AT: Được dùng để chỉ giờ  :  at 5’ o’clock, at 7 p.m, at midnight, at lunchtime

Dùng trong những cụm từ : - at noon  ; at midnight  ; at night; at sunrise/ dawn (at sunset/ dusk  ,  at Christmas; at once; at last ; at the moment; at weekend; at present......

·        ON:  Được dùng  để chỉ thứ, ngày : on April 21st, on Friday, on Christmas day…..

           Dùng trong những cụm từ : On Friday morning, on Sunday afternoon, on Monday evening, on weekends

·      IN: Được dùng  để chỉ năm tháng, mùa, thế kỉ: In April, in the 21 century, in 2010, in the 1990s, in (the Winter, in the Middle Ages.

     IN cũng dùng trong những cụm từ :

                           in the morning(s), in the afternoon(s), in the evening(s).

* Chú  ý:       Không dung  IN , ON, AT trước các từ như   ­ next, last

                           Eg: I’ll see you next Friday.

                                    They got married last month.

·      FOR: Được dùng để chỉ khoảng thời gian hành động diễn ra được bao lâu.                                 for six years, for two hours, for a week.

                           Eg: I’ve lived in this house for six years

·      DURING:  Được dùng để chỉ một hành động tiếp diễn trong khoảng thời gian bao lâu 

                              During the lesson,  during our vacation,  during the night

                           Eg: I will come and see my grand parents during my vacation.

·      BY + time: Không muộn hơn

                           Eg: You have to hand the essay by Monday

·      UNTIL :    Cho đến tận khi         Eg: I’ll be working until 11 o’clock.

B. Preposition of place:

·       Dùng AT khi nói tới một sự kiện.  

                 at a party, at a concert, at the movies, at a football match

                 AT Còn được dùng trong một số cụm từ:     at work, at an airport, at sea, at a station, at the seashore.

·      Dùng IN khi nói tới thành phố, làng mạc, đất nước : In Hanoi/ Vietnam

                         IN Còn được dùng trong một số cụm từ: in bed, in prison, in the hospital

C. Preposition of means of transportation:

·      Dùng BY khi nói về phương tiện đi lại : by car, by plane, by bus,……

·      Dùng  ON để nói về phương tiện đi bộ : on foot.

Ngoài ra mỗi danh từ, động từ, tính từ lại đi với một giới từ riêng:

           A reason for something, a solution to a problem, an invitation to a party/ wedding, famous for, interested in, fond of, ….

THEORY

What are phrasal verbs?

·        A phrasal verb is a verb plus a preposition or adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb.

EX: look for, look after, look up, look forward to, look down on …

                  I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. run + into = meet

He ran away when he was 15. run + away = leave home

 

There are four types of phrasal verbs. These are as belows:

1. Type 1 = verb + adverb (no object)

The verb and adverb cannot be separated and there is no passive form in this type.

EX:     break down = stop working

                    The car broke down and we had to walk.

2. Type 2 =    verb + adverb + object

            or:      verb + object + adverb

EX: Put off = postpone

                    We must put off the meeting for another week.

                    We must put the meeting off for another week

                    If the object is a pronoun the adverb must come after the object

                    We must put it off for another week

But not:

                    We must put off it for another week. (wrong sentence)

3. Type 3 = verb + preposition + object

The preposition cannot be separated from the verb.

EX:     take after = be similar to older relative (resemble)

         He takes after his mother.

         He takes after her.

But not:

         He takes his mother after.

         He takes her after.

4. Type 4 = verb + adverb + preposition + object

EX:     put up with = tolerate

         I can’t put up with his behaviour any more

         I can’t put up with it any more
